From Wanderlust to Unique Handmade Jewellery: The Story of Manik’s Beads
Each Manik's necklace begins long before the clasp is attached. Its origins lie in decades of travel, discovery, and a fascination with the universal aesthetic of beads. Today, Manik offers unique handmade jewellery of necklaces, each thoughtfully designed using beads from a unique collection gathered across cultures.
Where the Story Begins: A Lifelong Love for Adornment
The beginnings of Manik can be traced back to a childhood shaped by movement, diversity, and exposure to different cultures. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Malaysia, my love for adornment and ornaments began early. As a teenager, jewellery wasn’t merely decoration; it was’ art’- an expression of identity, taste, and curiosity.
This early fascination with jewellery eventually led to a focused interest in beads in the early ’90s, and what started as a hobby soon grew into a passion. Whether building an academic career in Singapore, and travelling for work or personal interest, beads stayed a constant companion. This steady collecting - small in quantity slowly laid the groundwork for what would one day become Manik International
A Global Journey Captured Through Beads
While travellers bring home souvenirs and others document their journeys through photos, I collected beads instead. Different cities often offered something distinctive, enriching the bead collection with different materials, color palettes, textures, and stories.

Small Quantities, Great Significance: The Heart of One-of-a-Kind Creation
One defining characteristic of Manik is that no necklace is duplicated. Each necklace is crafted using a limited selection of beads, possible because I collected beads intentionally, not commercially. Every necklace is one-of-a-kind.
This approach is what allows Manik to create truly unique handmade jewellery. When each bead is chosen individually and every necklace designed through iterative, thoughtful processes, the result is jewellery with a heartbeat.
How Travel Shapes Manik’s Design Philosophy
The multicultural origins of Manik’s beads naturally influence the design language of Manik. A single necklace may seamlessly blend elements from different parts of Asia and Europe. Here’s how travel inspires the creative process:
Cultural Color Palettes
Rich greens from cloisonné beads, earthy browns from gemstones, cool blues from European glasswork — all infuse Manik’s designs with cultural vibrancy.
Textural Diversity
Smooth gemstone beads, the patina of well-worn beads, the soft glow of unpolished silver beads, and polished vintage glass all come together in unique arrangements.
Symbolic Elements
Some beads carry traditional motifs, ancient patterns, or spiritual symbolism. Their integration adds not only visual appeal but narrative depth.
Each necklace becomes a miniature tapestry of cultures — proof that beads are more than materials. They are storytellers.
Unpacking a 30-Year Collection: The Turning Point
In 2021, post-home renovation brought a pivotal moment. Boxes of beads collected over nearly three decades were finally unpacked. Seeing the full breadth of the collection again sparked a renewed desire to create. With support from family, the idea for Manik took shape. The first official Manik's necklace, Chiaroscuro, symbolized a new beginning. From there, I began to design diligently to create a portfolio of necklaces that would spread my love of beads.
What emerged from this rediscovery was not simply jewellery but a philosophy - slow,
intentional, meaningful creation through the spirit of Manik’s beads.
The Making of a Manik's Necklace: A Slow, Thoughtful Art
Manik does not follow trends, mass production, or seasonal cycles. Every necklace undergoes multiple iterations before it is finalised. Beads are moved, rearranged, paired, separated, and tested until it feels like the composition has ‘arrived’. Even then, a finished necklace may still be subjected to re-design if found ‘lacking’, upon review.
This meticulous process reflects the principles of slow jewellery:
quality over quantity
purpose over speed
meaning over novelty
Using good - quality gemstone beads, vintage/antique collectable beads, high content silver beads, or gold-plated silver beads and durable 49-strand beading wire, every piece is crafted to last. Clasps are predominantly silver or gold-plated silver, maintaining both strength and flexibility.
This patient, thoughtful approach is what transforms a bead collection into unique handmade jewellery that carries soul and intention.

Beyond being a brand,Manik represents a lifelong journey expressed through beads. It is a celebration of global artistry and traditions, of cultural exchange, of patient creation, and of the quiet magic found in meaningful objects.
We would like to think that a Manik's necklace is more than an adornment. It is a story - one that began in markets, alleyways, artisan shops, and bead stalls from Kathmandu to Venice. With every design, I aim to transform the richness and beauty of beads into wearable art, enabling the wearer to carry a piece of that journey with them,
We feel that this is what makes Manik’s creations special; this is what elevates them into unique handmade jewellery that stands apart from the ordinary. And at the heart of every piece lies the soul of Manik’s beads, collected with passion and curiosity, crafted with intention, and worn with meaning.
FAQ
Unique Handmade jewellery is often considered more valuable because it reflects skilled craftsmanship, creativity, and individuality. Each piece is carefully designed and assembled by hand, allowing artisans to work with unique materials and create compositions that cannot be perfectly replicated. This level of attention and originality gives handmade jewellery both artistic and emotional value.
You can often identify handmade jewellery by subtle variations in bead placement, texture, and finishing details. Unlike mass-produced pieces, handcrafted jewellery may show small irregularities that reflect the artisan’s handwork. Many handmade pieces also come with information about the materials, origin of beads, or the creative process, which adds transparency to the craftsmanship.
Yes, well-crafted handmade beaded necklaces can be durable enough for everyday wear. Artisans typically use strong threading materials, secure clasps, and carefully balanced bead arrangements to ensure longevity. Proper care, such as avoiding excessive moisture and storing jewellery safely, can also help maintain the necklace over time.
The time required to create artisan handmade jewellery can vary depending on the complexity of the design and the techniques involved. At Manik, our designs go through various iterations before being finally ‘finished’. The whole process usually takes days - it depends on how close the first iterations are to the design notion. Sometimes, when the design just doesn’t seem ‘right’, it may be put aside to be returned to later, with a fresh eye.
Manik necklaces are created in limited quantities because many of the beads in the collection were gathered in small batches from different places around the world. Since these beads are not sourced in bulk, each design remains unique and cannot easily be reproduced.
