Asymmetry
This 56 cm necklaces brings together semi-precious stone beads in cubes of red jasper and leopard skin jasper, paired with coiled metal tubes, to create a symphony in ‘asymmetry’. For more info on the necklace, please click on Details, and if interested in my musings, please go to Story.
The identification of the beads start from the bead in the centre, moving upwards, with measurement for some of the bigger beads, with metal beads named last.

The concept for this necklace came fairly easily as there are various images around of jewelry that plays on the notion of asymmetry. So, for me, it was a question of what beads to use, and how to make it work.I decided against using rounds (too obvious, I felt)and decided that cubes would lend a more geometric feel. Fortunately, I had suffiicent cubes in red jasper and leopard skin to work the design. The smooth surface of the red jasper also provided a good contrast to the lighter, leopardskin design. I eschewed round spacers and went with the metal coil bicones in my collection. All these are ‘old’ beads that had been in my collection foryears. Nevertheless the design still went through severaliterations, as is common in my design process. Getting the right number of beads on each side to make it work seemed like the main issue at first. Even after settling on this, something still seemed ‘off’, and it took a while forme to realize that I needed a different spacer for each side. Thankfully, I had the longer coil tubes which worked well. I then added a pair of real silver tubes at the end of the necklace. My niece Y commented that this feels like a necklace for an architect! Not surprisingly, I am calling this necklace Asymmetry. At 56 cm, you would need to wear it over something collarless, or inside of a collar (if you are taller). I think it would go just as well with a crisp white shirt as it would a white tee, or a shift in light, or muted, colours, or even shades of brown, black, olive… This is also a relatively light necklace at 86gms.
