What makes Manik’s unique necklaces distinctive is that each necklace is individually composed rather than produced from a formula, with attention to scale, rhythm, colour, material and the relationships between beads. At times, designing a necklace feels rather like directing a film to me: individual beads may have their own character, but each has to be compatible with others, and to play its part in the composition as a whole.  I start off by assembling the different beads that I will already have in mind for a ‘concept’, trying out combinations and balancing colour, scale, shape, rhythm and materials, until the design takes shape. This usually takes several iterations, and even when a composition seems resolved, I often wait for a day and return with a fresh eye. Earthbound (in our Shop) was one such necklace –an original arrangement of bigger pieces of tiger’s eye and red jasper had seemed well-developed, but on reassessment, I was dissatisfied and started over. Earthbound now feels like a very different necklace, evocatively autumnal, reminding me of my first autumn walk in the woods in Bristol, so many  years ago.

I lived in Britain for five years, three of those in Bristol as an undergraduate, and two in Manchester reading for my Master’s degree. I also return to the UK from time to time.  Looking back, I realised that the lived experiences of those years - exposure to art, theatre, films, craft markets, and particularly handmade beaded jewellery in UK - gradually and subtly influenced my aesthetic sensibilities. They encouraged an orientation towards exploration, and towards seeing jewellery not just as adornment but as individual expression. That sensibility continues to inform the one-of-a-kind necklaces I create for Manik today.
