When Mr L first showed me the flat, turquoise-toned gemstone beads, I could not identify them, never having seen amazonite in this blue before. This intense blue variety is apparently the discovery of a new section of an existing deposit in Madagascar. I was really taken with the vibrantly blue string of tabular pieces in two shapes – ovals and drops and started designing a necklace with them for Manik quite soon after.
The bright turquoise of the amazonite reminded me of the blues of swimming pools, and in particular various paintings of them by Hockney. Furthermore, the flat stone shapes felt like water seen from above, and thus, I chose not to dilute the intensity of the blue with other gemstone beads, but brought in bright sterling silver bicones in various shapes which glint between the stones, like flashes of light dancing across a pool’s surface. This necklace has a relaxed, modern presence, cool and confident, but also light and serene! For someone who enjoys wearing vibrant colour and pieces with a fresh, expressive character. This would appeal to those drawn to artistic design and jewellery that feels lively rather than formal -pieces that make a statement through colour, movement and personality.
Not surprisingly, I am naming this necklace Splash! This would work well worn against many colours like classic neutrals, white, beige and grey, but also stronger colours like navy, emerald green etc. Have fun experimenting!
