The naming of the beads starts from the bead in the centre, with measurement for the bigger beads, moving upwards, with metal beads named last.

I have a small stock of vintage glass crystals, predominantly in blues, mostly from Mr L, probably the person from whom I buy the most gemstone beads in Singapore. Mr L knows his stones well but also understands my fondness for all kinds of interesting beads, and when in London, would comb Grey’s Market for interesting vintage beads! These ones though are from Taipei, and about 86 years old, but look so ‘modern’!
I had just enough of the glass crystals to make a necklace for myself, and this one for Manik. Given the colour palette, this design evokes the sea and the sky, a long composition of luminous blues and green that feels both fluid and architectural in their varied forms. The blues of lagoon, reef and deep water catch the light, while solid turquoise glass rounds anchor the palette. The asymmetrical design lends the necklace a natural rhythm, while the bright silver metal tube lengtheners create space between the clusters…This is a statement necklace that feels cool, modern and evocative
My niece N, said it reminded her of images of Maldives, and so we have named it Maldives Imagined. I can see it working with crisp white cotton and oatmeal linen, but I think it would also go well with other ‘natural’ colours like sage green, olive, and could also be contrasted with terracotta and rust! Experiment and enjoy!
